WHICH HOME HEATING SYSTEM WILL WORK BEST FOR YOU?

Autumn is here and that means the sleet, snow and wind of winter is on the horizon. Now’s the time to have a good look at your home’s heating system and see if it’s up to the task. If it’s plagued by repair problems, causing your energy bill to skyrocket or simply doesn’t warm your home up properly, it’s a good idea to visit your local plumbing and heating supply experts in NJ and select a new system. Here are some tips for choosing the right heating system for your home:
  1. What’s your current system’s problem? Knowing where your current pain points are will help you to narrow down your options. You may need a more powerful unit or a more energy efficient unit depending on what is currently motivating you to invest in a new system.
  2. What fuel are you using? There are several different types of furnaces and boilers on the market, but it’s often easiest and more affordable to stick with your current fuel type. Fortunately, there are a range of different powerful and high-efficiency units for each type fuel, so you won’t be stuck without a viable option.
  3. Going Green. These days, choosing a high efficiency unit is just as much about lowering your energy bill as it is preserving the environment. Essentially, these units reduce energy wastage as far as possible – for example, a 97% AFUE rating on your heating unit means that 97% of the energy powering the unit is converted into heat. This is a significant figure when you consider that older units have an AFUE rating of around 65%!
  4. Size matters. The output of your heating system must be able to measure up to the demands of your home and household. A unit that is highly efficient but too small will leave you wearing multiple sweaters indoors, while a unit that is too big will result in wasted energy.

INSIDE THE AFUE RATING SYSTEM

When you’re looking at investing in a new HVAC system, boiler or air conditioning system, you’re likely to find them rated according to the AFUE system. Find out what this ratings system really means, from leading HVAC supply specialists in NJ.

What us AFUE?
Known as AFUE, the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating is an expert ratings system for measuring the energy efficiency of a heating or cooling system. It looks specifically at how much of the fuel the system requires (whether electricity, gas, etc.) is converted into heat (for water heaters, boilers, etc.) or cool air (in air conditioning systems, etc.).

What does the AFUE rating mean?
So, if your furnace, for example, has an AFUE rating of 80%, this means that 80% of the energy it uses is converted into heat. But is that a good rating? What rating should you aim for when selecting a new system?
Older heating and cooling systems tend to have a fairly low AFUE rating, often around 65-70%, which is considered poor by today’s technologically advanced standards. It also means that you’re paying for a significant amount of energy that is simply being wasted.
A medium energy efficiency rating is around 80-83% AFUE, which is still a good step up from old, inefficient systems. If you are looking for a high-efficiency unit, look for systems with an AFUE score between 90-97%. Keep in mind that although these systems will be more expensive to purchase, they will allow significant savings in the long-term by reducing your energy bill.
