Boiler Safety Valves: Essential Protection At Home And In Industry

Boilers are in homes; industries and properties across the country, and these important pieces of equipment have safety devices installed in them to make sure that residents and their families can enjoy the practical benefits of hot water on demand without placing themselves at risk. One of these devices is a boiler safety valve.

Why are boiler safety valves important?

Boilers operate under a lot of pressure, and the hot water and steam they contain can cause severe injury if the boiler should fail. Safety valves work to protect lives from a variety of boiler failures, including:

  • An imbalance of fluid flow caused by the failure of isolation valves.
  • Failure of a cooling system, allowing the water or steam to expand and rupture the boiler.
  • Ambient temperature changes.
  • Failure of the control instruments of the boiler.
  • Transient pressure surges.
  • Heat exchanger tube failure.

The valve works to relieve the pressure building up inside the boiler. Without this pressure relief, the boiler is at risk of bursting. All boilers are required to have at least one of these valves, depending on the boiler’s capacity. In the USA, only non-assisted safety valves are permitted, and they are located inside the boiler steam drum itself. If the pressure rises above the recommended level for safety, these are automatically open and release excess pressure to take the strain off the boiler drum.

Once pressure is back down to safe levels, the valve will reset itself to prevent the pressure dropping too far and wasting energy. This reset mechanism reactivates the safety valve, which will then trigger again if the pressure gets too high.

The average lifetime for a boiler is 10 years, and if that time is coming up for your residential or commercial boiler, now is the right time to start looking for affordable, high-efficiency replacement boilers. The last think you want to do is wait for your boiler to fail and flood your home or business! Wholesalers can offer you an extensive range of boilers and water heaters – and sales staff will assist you in determining exactly which product will suit your requirements. Common Plumbing Myths Busted By Our Plumbing Supply Company

  1. Off the shelf solutions always work: While some miracle-in-a-bottle plumbing solutions do work, it really depends on the problem. Most of the time, these products treat the symptoms, not the underlying issue, which will only get worse over time.
  2. Leaky taps are normal: In fact, a dripping tap can waste over 2,000 gallons of water a year! That’s a lot of water to waste, and a lot extra to pay on your utilities bill. Usually these issues are fairly simple to fix, so ask your local plumbing supply company for a lasting fix.
  3. Everything can be flushed down a toilet: Clogs in your toilet system are one of the worst things for homeowners to deal with, so it’s best to avoid them. The best way to do that? Don’t flush anything down the toilet other than your human waste and toilet paper. Even items labelled as flushable, like wipes, are often too durable to dissolve properly and move down the sewer line. This is an especially important rule if you have a septic tank.
  4. Putting ice blocks in your garbage disposal sharpens the blades: In reality, garbage disposals don’t have blades. Instead, they have an impeller that has fairly dull edges but effectively grinds away waste when it rotated against the grinder ring. Ice blocks can’t have any effect on this process but, due to their hardness, may actually damage your disposal.
  5. All plumbers can do all plumbing work: When looking for a plumber, it is important to find a reputable  plumbing services provider who can deal with your specific issue. Some plumbers specialize in remodeling services, others in household emergency services, and others in severe drain issues or commercial plumbing. If you are unsure of who to call in your area, speak to the team at Crosstown Plumbing Supply and we will recommend a trusted service provider.

How To Prevent Mold Growth In Your HVAC System

When humidity is high, your HVAC or air conditioning system can be affected by mold growth. Here’s what to do, from HVAC specialists at our plumbing supply company in New Jersey.
Mold growth is common in HVAC and AC units because moisture can build up inside the system, creating an ideal environment for molds. The circulation of air throughout the home also makes it easier for mold spores to travel into the system as well as spread to other warm, moist rooms in the home, including laundry rooms, basements, bathrooms and kitchens. These molds create a musty, unhealthy environment in the home that can result in breathing problems, allergy issues and an unpleasant, musty smell. Some molds are even highly toxic. This makes it essential that your HVAC system is kept clear and clean throughout the year.
Four steps to take that will keep your HVAC system mold-free
  • Replace the filters: Filters should be replaced regularly to keep your system operating effectively, and wet, dirty filters are often a great environment for mold. While once a year is fine, you should check the filter and clean it monthly, especially in high humidity months.
  • Use a mold inhibitor: There are products made specifically for HVAC units that will help prevent mold growth. Make sure that the inhibitor you are applying is labeled for use by the EPA in HVAC systems, and apply as directed.
  • Use a disinfectant: This will work to kill off any mold inside the HVAC system to prepare it for the mold inhibitor, which will stop future mold growth from occurring. It will also thoroughly clean the system and ensure that it is hygienic. As with the mold inhibitor, you need to choose one labeled for use by the EPA in HVAC systems, and apply as directed.
  • Prevent moisture build-up: Moisture is key to mold growth, so ensuring that it is minimized will help prevent growth. When cleaning your HVAC unit, use an industrial wet vacuum to remove any standing water and dry out the system.
Need to replace your air conditioner and HVAC parts?

Enhance Your Home Office With A High-Efficiency Air Conditioning System

Home offices are a great asset, but they do need all the essentials if they’re going to become a productive space. High-efficiency air conditioning systems help to create an environment that helps boost productivity, without significantly impacting your energy bill. Here’s how:
  1. Reduced humidity: That sticky, airless feeling you get outdoors in the summer? That’s humidity – and it doesn’t make you want to do anything more than lie down with a cold drink somewhere in the shade. Most air conditioners have a dehumidification setting that takes this excess moisture out of the air without making your space too cold, which helps you stay productive even on the most humid days.
  2. Comfort: The great thing about home offices is that you can set your climate to a temperature and moisture level that suits you, and change it as the season’s progress. You can also set it to kick in before your work day starts and automatically shut off for the evening, keeping your energy bills down.
  3. Silent and efficient: With the right air conditioning system, you should be almost unaware that it’s even there. Modern units are incredibly quiet and unobtrusive, and they use very little electricity to get you great results. With high-efficiency machines, you may also qualify for state rebates in addition to lowering your energy bill.
  4. A better environment: An open window may seem like an effortless solution, but it comes with its own set of issues. From insects and dust flying in, to traffic noise, rain and gusts of wind that blow all your papers off your desk, windows can often cause more issues than they solve. Air conditioners have none of these issues, and with silent, unobtrusive machines on the market with state-of-the-art filters, you’ll have a cleaner, quieter and less chaotic space.
  5. Heat: Many air conditioning systems come with a heat pump feature that allows you to increase the temperature in the colder months, ensuring that your space stays climate controlled regardless of the weather outside.
Affordable, high-efficiency air conditioner installation in New Jersey
At Crosstown Plumbing Supply, we can either assist you with choosing a high-efficiency, low maintenance replacement air conditioner or HVAC system (including central heating and air and ductless air conditioning systems). As we are a wholesaler located in a 3.5% NJ sales tax zone, we can make your repairs and services the most affordable in town. Our sales consultants are highly experienced and happy to assist you with finding the right part for your needs and we work closely with reliable, affordable air conditioning and HVAC professionals you prefer not to go the DIY route.

Build your reputation as a plumbing contractor - Use quality supplies

Getting a good reputation in the plumbing industry is essential if you want to build a successful business. Whether you’re in commercial plumbing, residential plumbing or both, there are a few things you need to develop a sound professional image.
  • Get licensed: The State ofNew Jersey requires plumbers to have a license in order to work as a skilled tradesman. After applying to be an apprentice or journeyman plumber, you can take exams that qualify you as a master plumber. Other criteria include proof of your financial stability, work experience and qualifications – all things that prove to your clients that you are a professional that they can rely on.
  • Get insured: Insurance is as good for you as it is for your clients, providing both parties with effective protection. It will cover you in the event of an injury or accident and it assures the homeowner of the quality of your workmanship and that they are covered in the event of property damage.
  • Get bonded: While this isn’t essential for most plumbing work, it demonstrates to clients that your work is bondable – that is, financial institutions are satisfied with your workmanship and services, and that you meet their strict requirements for bonded work.
  • Offer a warranty: As a plumber, you should always guarantee your services and labor as well as the parts you use for at least one year. This is reassuring to clients and shows that you are prepared to stand by your work.
  • Get testimonials: Just like other building contractors, you are only as good as your last job. Having testimonials and references from previous clients is invaluable, as it shows potential clients the high quality of your work.
  • Get the right plumbing suppliesHigh quality plumbing supplies are the keystones to your business, whether you are fixing a leak or doing an entire bathroom renovation. Find a supplier with a trusted name, who has been doing business in the area for a long time and can offer you great prices on top quality parts.

Six plumbing maintenance tips from Crosstown Plumbing Supply

Though plumbing is a crux of modern day conveniences, it’s not until we have a plumbing issue that we realize just how dependent we are. Businesses and homeowners alike can avoid plumbing issues by following these six plumbing maintenance tips provided by the plumbing supply professionals at Crosstown Plumbing.
  1. Prevent clogged drains: Clogged drains happen to every home, but they are easy to prevent using an environmentally friendly drain clearing solution which you can easily make at home. Just mix 1 cup of baking soda, 1 cup of salt and ¼ cup of cream of tartar. Simply pour an equal amount of the mix down each drain and follow that with 2 cups of hot water.
  2. Keep drains grease-free: This is especially important in winter, when cold pipes are more likely to collect grease from cooking. All you have to do is run cold water for 15 seconds before and after using your garbage disposal and avoid pouring grease down your drains whenever possible.
  3. Insulate all your pipes: Extreme changes in temperature are very wearing on pipes, valves and other plumbing fittings, so ensure your home’s insulation includes your pipes. Remember to have specialists check hot and cold water pipes, as well as pipes in drafty areas like crawl spaces, attics and garages.
  4. Drain your water heater: It’s best to drain your hot water heater once a year to remove the sediment that builds up from use and keep it working at optimal performance. It’s best to undertake this task in the fall, before the weather gets cold. This gives you enough time to contact a plumbing specialist and do any necessary repairs before the busy winter season starts.
  5. Monitor your utility bill: An unexplained increase in water use on your utility bill can be a sign of a plumbing problem in your home, so be sure to regularly track your water usage. Leaks, toilets that aren’t flushing properly and dripping showers can easily add significant waste water to your bill and the sooner these issues are resolved, the better – for your home’s plumbing and your wallet.
  6. Watch out for leaks: Even small water leaks can lead to big problems including: mold and water damage on walls, floors and cabinets, and eventually even structural problems in your home. Avoid long term issues by repairing leaks as soon as they appear.

What to do with a leaking toilet - Advice from plumbing supply wholesalers

Toilets are simple but effectively designed pieces of equipment, making it relatively easy to troubleshoot, if you know what look for. Below we will review common toilet issues and how to repair them with advice from leading plumbing parts supplier in New Jersey.

Condensation on the toilet water tank
  • What to look for: While this isn’t a leak in the traditional sense, it is an unpleasant situation. Caused by a significant temperature difference between the warm, steamy air of a bathroom and the cooler water in the tank, this issue is fairly common in well-used bathrooms.
  • How to fix it: Fortunately, there are a few quick and easy ways to fix this problem without spending a lot of money. You can install toilet tank liners, which will help insulate the tank water from the warm air to prevent the condensation or you can install an anti-sweat toilet tank valve, which mixes warm and cool water in the tank to reduce the temperature difference which causes the condensation to form.
Water leaking between the water tank and the toilet bowl
  • What to look for: First, carefully remove your toilet tank lid when the tank is full of water (that is, you have not flushed it recently). Add some organic coloring, such as food coloring, to the tank water to stain it. After about 30-45 minutes, check the floor of your bathroom for any drips or pools of colored water. If you find any, you have this issue.
  • How to fix it: These types of leaks are generally due to a worn tank-to-bowl sponge gasket or worn washers on the tank-to-bowl bolts. To replace these parts, you’ll need to empty and remove the tank from the bowl and replace exactly which parts are behind your leak. As this is a pretty time-consuming job, it’s usually best to replace all the washers and their bolts at the same time, since they are likely to have a similar level of wear.
A cracked water tank
  • What to look for: Perform the food coloring test as outlined above. If drips or streaks of colored water appear on your water tank itself, you likely have a cracked tank.
  • How to fix it: Unfortunately, there is no reliable way to fix cracked water tanks and the leak is likely to get much worse over time. The best solution is to replace the tank or the entire toilet itself.
A leaking shut-off valve
  • What to look for: Many people who suspect their toilet is leaking actually have a faulty shut-off valve that has either come loose or become worn, causing water to leak out of it intermittently.
  • How to fix it: Firstly, try to tighten the valve itself. It may have simply come loose or have been loosened by mistake. If this does not work or the valve cannot be tightened, it can be replaced with a new one.
