Gas Boiler? Your Home Needs Protection From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Gas boilers offer high-performance heating for homes and businesses and are designed to meet high standards for safety and manufacturing quality. However, with every system of this kind there is a level of risk, and it’s important to have the right information and systems in place to ensure a healthy, safe environment. Here’s some insight on carbon monoxide poisoning risks, from plumbing wholesalers in NJ.

Why Do Gas Boilers Leak Carbon Monoxide?

Gas boilers don’t actually leak carbon monoxide – they create it, especially when they are not operating correctly. Carbon monoxide is created when your boiler isn’t consuming fuel completely, leaving the carbon monoxide to build up in the environment.

Why is this Dangerous?

Carbon monoxide is very dangerous to people and pets. When we breathe it in, it binds to the hemoglobin in our blood, the component that usually take oxygen around our bodies. By doing this, it blocks out the oxygen and we begin to suffocate. Children, the elderly and people with respiratory conditions are especially vulnerable to carbon monoxide poisoning.

How Can I Protect My Family?

Unfortunately, carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, so we’re unable to detect it with our own senses – but CO detectors can. These should be installed in each room of your home or near appliances. Be sure to test these detectors each year to make sure that the alarms are still in good working order.

The other thing you can do is ensure that your gas boiler is repaired and maintained to a high standard, as this will reduce the risk of carbon monoxide production. If your gas boiler is very old – over 15 years – it’s a good idea to replace it, as it likely isn’t working very efficiently or consuming fuel properly at that age and is far more likely to produce high levels of carbon monoxide.

How To Find Affordable Commercial and Residential Boilers In NJ

Boiler systems are an expensive – but vital – investment for your home or business, especially in the winter months. However, there are affordable but high-quality options out there if you know where to look! Here’s some advice from the team at our plumbing wholesalers in NJ.

Plumbing Wholesalers in NJ Have What You Need!

Wholesalers can offer you an extensive range of boilers and water heaters for both commercial and residential use – and sales staff will assist you in determining exactly which product will suit your requirements. With cast iron boilers, steel boilers, high efficiency boilers and steam boilers running on oil, gas and electricity, wholesalers can explain exactly how each product will assist you and guide you through the buying process. In addition to standard boilers with an efficiency of 84% (regardless of AFUE rating), high-tech options are also available. This includes computer-controlled boilers that can reduce energy consumption by up to %16, many of which qualify under the New Jersey clean energy program for extensive rebates.

So, why are Plumbing Wholesalers so Affordable?

When you’re looking for a commercial boiler or a residential boiler in New Jersey, you don’t want to compromise on quality. Buying from a plumbing wholesaler means a cheaper cost without compromising on quality. This is because we get our boilers direct from leading manufacturers and sell directly to you – so there’s no middle man involved. Without the markup that occurs between a product leaving the floor and arriving in a showroom, wholesalers are able to offer you the same high-quality products at a significant discount.

Furnace Or Heat Pump -What Will Work Best For Your Home?

When looking at home heating systems, you are going to have to choose between a heat pump and a furnace. So, what is the better option?

  • Measuring Performance And Efficiency:

Furnaces:

Furnaces burn fuel, so their performance is measured with an AFUE rating – the higher the rating, the more efficient the furnace is. For a gas furnace, it has to have a rating of at least 90% to be considered of a high efficiency.

 Heat Pumps

Heat pumps run on electricity, so their efficiency and performance are measured with a SEER rating. A good quality heat pump has a 14 or 16 SEER rating.

  • What Is A Heat Pump?

Essentially, a heat pump is an air conditioner that can also work in reverse, so it can cool your home in summer and warm it up in winter, giving you both solutions in a single system. It can either pump the heat into or out of your home. They are considered environmentally friendly because they do not require fossil fuels, but they can be more expensive to run because of the higher price of electricity despite often being more efficient than a furnace. They are also a bit heavier on maintenance, but that is because you use them all year round, so they work twice as hard as your air conditioner and furnace.

  • Comparing Heat Pumps And Furnaces:

Heat Pumps:

Heat pumps are only efficient in weather that is above freezing temperatures, as they work by pumping heat from the environment into your home. If you regularly experience below-freezing temperatures in winter, this option will not work for your home unless you have supplemental heating systems like a wood-burning stove.

 Furnaces:

A furnace, on the other hand, can operate in even the coldest environments as long as it has fuel. Therefore, your energy bill will increase, as it gets colder and the furnace has to work harder.

Lifespan:

The lifespan of a heat pump is around 15 years, while a furnace can regularly last over 20 years (although you can expect to see a decrease in efficiency as it ages). Fuel expenses for a furnace will change according to the type of fuel it uses, and while a gas furnace is often more affordable to run than a heat pump, many people don’t have access to natural gas in their area.

Is Your Home Heating System Energy-Efficient? Find Out:

In the fierce New Jersey winters, heating your home is essential! However, the last thing you want is to be surprised by a massive energy bill! This means carefully managing your home’s heating and, most importantly, ensuring that your heating system is as efficient as it can be. Here are some tips from our team:

  • What Is Your AFUE Rating?

The AFUE rating, or annual fuel utilization efficiency rating, is the best indicator of how efficient your home heating system is. Essentially, this rating is the percentage of how efficiently your heater converts fuel into energy – the higher the rating, the better your system is because less fuel is wasted. For example, a 90% AFUE indicates that 90% of the fuel powering your heater is turned into heat and 10% is wasted. Older furnaces can perform surprisingly badly, often with an AFUE as low as 56%. This means that almost half of that fuel is wasted, so you are spending almost twice as much to heat your home as you would with a unit that has a 100% AFUE rating. You can find your system’s rating on its manual or on the sticker inside the furnace cabinet. To be considered a high-efficiency unit, it must have a rating of 90% or higher, and the lowest standard for new equipment is 76%.

  • Compare Your Bills:

Energy bills fluctuate with the seasons and the use thereof. But, tracking them each month should help you spot unusually high bills that can indicate your heating system is no longer operating efficiently. It may need a simple service or repair, or it may have become worn out with age and may need replacing. Furnaces have an average lifespan of 20 or more years. However, recent breakthroughs in technology have meant that current new models may be worth investing in even if your furnace is just 10 years old; due to the energy savings they offer.

  • Maintain Your Heating System:

Regular preventative maintenance is critical to the optimal performance of your heating system and the extension of its lifespan. It goes a long way to prevent the issues that reduce efficiency and thus increase your energy costs, and it stops small problems from becoming expensive ones. Try to time your maintenance schedule for the fall, before everyone turns on their heating and parts/service providers are in high demand.

Help! I Have No Hot Water!

There are few things that are worse than getting ready for your day and realizing that your home or business suddenly has no hot water. Here are common reasons why your boiler or hot water heating system may fail and what to do about it, from the specialists in boilers in NJ.

  • Check your water supply: Your boiler or hot water heater may have switched off or stopped working because your water supply has stopped. Check to see that your energy supply is still functioning and that your property isn’t experiencing a water cut-off. A power cut can also affect your electric hot water heater, causing it to revert to factory settings. Your manual should include instructions on how to re-program it in this event.
  • Frozen pipes: A very cold snap can cause severe problems for boilers and hot water heaters, compromising the water supply. Frozen pipes will need to be thawed, repaired (if needed) and properly insulated to prevent the same issue in future.
  • Airlocks: Airlocks occur when air becomes trapped inside the water pipe, often due to damage or repairs on the pipe. If the air collects in a high point of the pipe, it can completely block water flow and will have to be cleared by professionals.
  • Leaking or damaged boiler or hot water heater: There are many reasons a hot water tank or boiler can burst – often, it is just a result of old age – but this issue requires quick, professional intervention. Often, tanks and boilers have sensors that shut down the system for safety reasons. First, shut off your water supply and the energy supply to the tank at the main fuse board. Never touch any wires, the gas supply or the tank itself, and don’t step into the spilled water. Then, call in the professionals to evaluate and repair the problem.

How To Prepare Your Home For The Winter Chill

Homes across New Jersey are getting ready for the winter months, transforming into cozy, warm spaces where we can escape the chilly weather. Here are some tips from our home heating system specialists on preparing your home.

  • Deal with leaks and drafts: Heating a home takes time, money and energy – so the last thing you want is for all that warm air to go to waste. Check your home’s doors and windows as well as vents, electrical/gas lines and plumbing for gaps where warm air could leak out of your home or cold air can get in. Often, it as simple as applying weather stripping or spray foam insulation, but professionals are available to assist with more complex jobs like inspecting and sealing ductwork.
  • Check your insulation: Homes with poor insulation will be a challenge to keep warm even with a powerful heating system – and your bills will skyrocket too. Have your home’s insulation inspected (especially the attic, exterior walls and basement) and ensure that it is up to recommended standards.
  • Clear the gutters: Leaves and other debris quickly clog up gutters in the fall and early winter months, blocking one of your home’s most important drainage systems. When gutters clog, rain and snowmelt can start seeping into your home’s walls, siding and foundation, causing moisture leaks, damp, mold and structural damage.
  • Clean or replace air filters: Air filters capture debris and dirt to prevent it from entering your home or damaging your system. As the filters clog up, it becomes more difficult to supply your home with warm air, so your system can wear or break – and heating costs can rise. Replacing or cleaning these filters is a simple job and instructions should be with your system’s manual.

What To Consider When Choosing A New Toilet For Your Bathroom Remodel

If you’re doing a bathroom remodel, chances are that you’re spending most of your time selecting the perfect tub, tiles and vanities – but it’s important to spend some time considering your choice of toilet too. There is a surprising range of options out there, so here are some tips from our plumbing supply company.

  • The shape of the bowl: Elongated and round bowl shapes are the most common and, while elongated are the more comfortable and preferred shape, round bowls are great for smaller bathroom spaces.
  • Flush technology: Toilets may look like they haven’t changed much since their invention, but the reality is different. Toilet models over 15 years old use an average of 3.4 gallons of water per flush, while new toilet models can use as little as 1.6 gallons. Make sure to select a model that not only saves money but also guarantees a good flush power to ensure that they can get the job done. There are also dual-flush toilets that offer additional savings by having a half and full volume flush option.
  • Tank or tankless: Tank toilets are traditional but tankless options are now fairly common on the market. With a connection directly into your water supply, they offer cost savings (by using less water per flush) without compromising on flush pressure.
  • Height: Standard height for a toilet seat is 14-15 inches from the floor. There are higher options that sit at 17-19 inches off the floor, known as “comfort height”, which are well-suited to adults but may be too high off the floor for young children.
  • Cleanliness: Design is not just about looking good, it’s about making a toilet easy to use and clean. Seamless designs are easiest to clean and there are even options that connect into the wall rather than the floor to make the job even easier. Two-piece toilets are still popular but can take a bit more effort to clean.

Gas Hot Water Heaters - All The Pros And Cons

When choosing a hot water heater, one of the first decisions you’ll have to make is whether you want an electric, solar power or gas hot water heater. Here are some insights into what gas models have to offer.

  • Higher hot water delivery – faster: Gas hot water heaters can heat and deliver up to 35% more hot water in an hour than an electric counterpart of the same size. This is especially important in homes where there is a big hot water demand – for example, in larger families where dishwashers and showers, etc. may often run at the same time.
  • Lower energy costs: Electric hot water units often use less energy than gas versions, but the high cost of electricity means that running a gas hot water heater will still be the cheaper option. In fact, it costs 30% less on average over the USA to run on gas.
  • Faster recovery for tank water heaters: Gas hot water heaters recover after use 3-4 times faster than electric hot water heaters. This means that you can install a smaller tank – saving space and investment/installation costs while keeping up with hot water demand.
  • Hot water through power outages: If you choose a gas hot water heater with a pilot light, it will stay running throughout power outages, so you still have easy access to hot water.

So now that we know the advantages, are there any disadvantages to consider?

  • Complex installation: If you don’t already have a gas unit, the installation can be a costly and complex process. You’ll need access to a gas line, and you’ll need to install venting as well.
  • Higher maintenance: While quality gas water heaters are designed for low maintenance, they still have more parts than electric units, so maintenance can occur more regularly.
  • Leak and explosion risks: Any gas-powered equipment carries safety risks that electric units don’t. To keep your family and property safe and to minimize these risks, it is essential that you have a high-quality gas hot water heater installed and maintained by qualified professionals, in line with all building codes and regulations.

Sewer Snakes- When and How to Use Them

Drain or sewer snakes are useful additions to any homeowner’s toolkit, helping to unclog drains quickly and easily. Here’s a quick guide to these tools from plumbing wholesalers in New Jersey.

Common Issues a Sewer or Drain Snake can Solve

These are a great tool for small clogs in your plumbing system, like clogged bath or shower drains, clogs in bathroom and kitchen sinks and so on. They are highly effective on clogs caused by hair (human and pet), food debris, and toilet paper.

However, they won’t work on larger clogs and root growth. While the sewer snake may be able to punch a hole through a larger clog, the issue will quickly return, so it’s better to call in a professional with larger, stronger equipment for hydro-jetting.

How to Use a Drain or Sewer Snake

The plumbing snake is a flexible cable attached to a spool that you unwind with a hand crank. Start by inserting the plumbing snake into the clogged drain and pushing it along until it reaches the source of the problem – you’ll feel some resistance, but just keep extending the snake. The snake rotates as it moves down the pipe and as it does so, it breaks up any debris it encounters. This makes it very easy to use, requiring no experience or even an electricity source!

Different Drain Snakes

There are several different types of drain snake on the market. These include toilet augers, which are suited to toilet clogs, urinal augers for men’s urinals, and top snakes with longer cables for drains in bathtubs/showers/sinks.

Eco-Friendly Plumbing Fixtures For Your Home

Green technology is a fantastic trend that homeowners around New Jersey and the world are embracing as an effective way to reduce our environmental footprint and save money. Here are some fixtures recommended by our plumbing supply company to assist you in living a greener life at home.

  • Low-flow toilets: Toilets, especially older models, use a massive amount of fresh drinking water each time they’re flushed – as much as 3-5 gallons each time – wasting a precious resource and your hard-earned money. Today’s low-flow toilets are affordable, look stylish and operate efficiently, removing waste with ease and saving you money.
  • Tankless water heaters: One principle of living a more eco-friendly life is only using as much as you need, thereby eliminating wastage – and a tankless water heater allows you and your household to do that without running the risk of not having any hot water. Traditional tank water heaters heat water continuously – by comparison, a tankless system uses an average of 30-50% less energy by only heating water when you need it. Tankless water heaters also have a much longer lifespan, saving you even more money.
  • Low-flow faucets and showerheads: Great water pressure is essential in the home, but the traditional way of achieving this wastes a lot of water – around 2.5 gallons per minute. Modern low-flow faucets and shower heads use a combination of water and air pressure to deliver the same, satisfying result but reducing your water use by half or more! They’re also inexpensive and easy to install, making it a simple way to make a big difference.

AC Coil Cleaning - Everything You Need To Know

Cleaning air conditioners is a necessary part of keeping them in good working order – and keeping your home feeling comfortable through the heat of the summer. Here are some tips from our team who specializes in air conditioners in New Jersey on how to clean your AC coils.

Why it’s Important

Not only does cleaning the AC coils keep your system running smoothly, it also lowers maintenance costs and the risk of needing more expensive repairs. Regularly cleaned and maintained AC units use less energy and also last longer, so you won’t have to upgrade until you want to do so.

How Often Should I Clean Air Conditioner Coils in NJ?
Generally, an annual cleaning in the spring is enough for most units, but if you are a heavy user of your air conditioning system or it’s an older model, it’s a good idea to clean them once in the spring and once later in the summer.

Similarly, if your property is located in a windy or dusty environment, or where debris (including garden clippings and leaves) are fairly heavy, you’ll also have to clean them more regularly.
If you feel your air conditioning system isn’t performing as efficiently as it should, it’s a good sign that it’s time for the coils to get cleaned.

How to Clean Air Conditioning System Coils

Fortunately, this is a fairly easy – although important – job. Don’t use any abrasive or high-pressure equipment or cleaning supplies that are not specifically recommended for AC coils as they are fairly delicate and can be damaged easily. Instead, simply hose them down thoroughly and clear away any debris or dirt around the unit. If that doesn’t help and you’re still worried about your system’s performance, it’s time to come in and speak to the specialists.

HVAC System and Air Conditioners – Parts and Units – in New Jersey

At Crosstown Plumbing Supply, we can either assist you with choosing a high-efficiency, low maintenance replacement air conditioner or HVAC system (including central heating and air and ductless air conditioning systems) or provide you with an extensive range of plumbing supplies to replace necessary parts in your current system.

As we are a plumbing wholesaler located in a 3.5% NJ sales tax zone, we can make your repairs and services the most affordable in town. Our sales consultants are highly experienced and happy to assist you with finding the right part for your needs and we work closely with reliable, affordable air conditioning and HVAC professionals you prefer not to go the DIY route.

A Guide To Different Types of HVAC Systems

HVAC systems are a significant investment for any home or business owner, so it’s important to find one that has the right capacity and features to meet your needs and provide the comfort you’re looking for. Here’s a quick guide to the main types of HVAC systems from our air conditioning system specialists in NJ.

  • Split HVAC systems: These are traditional HVAC systems with two sets of major components, one located inside the building and the other set located outdoors. Ducts ensure that the correct-temperature air is delivered to the right space quickly and efficiently. With a simple, classic design, these HVAC systems are efficient for use in homes and smaller buildings. They’re easy to install and maintain, operate efficiently and often have remote control components for ease of use.
  • Ductless split HVAC systems: If you don’t have the space for ducts, this system is your best option. It uses a heat pump and an air conditioner as well as a thermostat control panel to deliver the correct-temperature air. It’s great for zoned heating and cooling and can help you qualify for major tax credits and utility rebates.
  • Hybrid HVAC systems: This is a split system that’s fitted with a heat pump, making them more energy-efficient than traditional slip systems and able to replace a standard gas furnace. They usually come with a user-friendly interface to control the system and are ideal for heating or cooling very large spaces, or spaces that have to deal with very extreme environments, as they are known for their remarkable efficiency.
  • Single package HVAC systems: Smaller spaces often don’t have the capacity for large HVAC systems, which is where the single package HVAC system is very useful. It’s an air conditioner and heater in one – saving you both space and money.

Summer Air Conditioning System Maintenance Tips

If there’s one piece of equipment that New Jersey home and business owners can’t do without, it’s the air conditioning system. With the summer in full swing, it’s important to keep these running properly if you want to keep enjoying that cool air and minimize your energy expenses. Here are some maintenance tips from our air conditioning system specialists in New Jersey.

  • Clean the air filters: These are found in the unit you’ll find inside your home or building. Clogged filters will reduce the capacity of your unit, reducing the flow of cool air. It also forces your air conditioning system to work harder than it should, increasing energy use and the risk of breakdowns. Simply remove the front panel above the air outlet, remove the filter (rectangular, mesh-like screens) and gently wipe them down gently with a damp cloth before replacing.
  • Check your condenser: This is the large unit that you’ll find outside and it’s responsible for removing warm air from inside. As this unit is outdoors, dirt and debris from the environment are an issue and it should be cleaned regularly. Dirty or blocked condensers cause a decrease in your air conditioning system’s energy efficiency and an increase in your energy and repair bills. Clear away any loose debris and plant life from around your condenser, and make sure there are no twigs or debris close to the fan blades.
  • Clear your coolant pipes: This can be done while you’re checking your condenser, as these are the pipes that run from the condenser into the building. Check that your pipes are in good condition, with no splits, cracks or damage. If they are damaged, you’ll need to replace them as soon as possible.
  • Call in the pros: If you notice that your air conditioning system isn’t performing as it should, or you come across an issue that is beyond your DIY skills, call in the professionals to take a look as soon as you are able. Don’t ignore any potential issues, as this can lead to breakdowns and expensive repairs.

What to do When Strange Smells are Coming From your HVAC System

There’s nothing worse than when your HVAC system starts to smell – it’s not only unpleasant, it can be bad for your health or dangerous to your property, so it’s important to find out what the source is and deal with it before it gets any worse. Here are some tips from our plumbing supply company in New Jersey.

The Number One Culprit Behind Smelly HVAC Systems in New Jersey? Mold!

Mold loves growing where it’s warm, damp and dark – and that’s the inside of your HVAC system. When it’s running, there’s a lot of condensation that forms inside the unit. When this moisture can’t drain out easily, it seeps into the ducts of the system where the mold thrives. So, what can you do?

  • Buy a mold inhibitor: There are products made specifically for HVAC units that will help prevent mold growth. Make sure that the inhibitor you are applying is labeled for use by the EPA in HVAC systems, and apply as directed.
  • Disinfect your HVAC: This will work to kill off any mold inside the HVAC system to prepare it for the mold inhibitor, which will stop future mold growth from occurring. It will also thoroughly clean the system and ensure that it is hygienic. As with the mold inhibitor, you need to choose one labeled for use by the EPA in HVAC systems, and apply as directed.
  • Filter replacement: Filters should be replaced keep your system operating effectively, and wet, dirty filters are often a great environment for mold. While once a year is fine, you should check the filter and clean it monthly, especially in high humidity months.
  • Clear your HVAC system out to prevent moisture build-up: Moisture is key to mold growth, so ensuring that it is minimized will help prevent growth. When cleaning your HVAC unit, use an industrial wet vacuum to remove any standing water and dry out the system.

How to Make your Kitchen Remodel Eco-Friendly

Environmentally-friendly remodels are a huge trend at the moment for homeowners who want to update their kitchens and also reap the benefits of a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Here are some tips from wholesale suppliers of granite and other kitchen countertops on how to achieve a green kitchen.

  • Recycled and earth-friendly countertops: There are plenty of sustainable materials available for your countertops, from recycled countertops (try IceStone, Eco by Consentino, Durat or Grenite), local wholesale granite countertops and eco-friendly laminates from leading brands to simply re-purposing the countertops you already have.
  • Sustainable cabinets: Recycling is a great option here, as many people upgrading their kitchens are happy to sell off their cabinetry for much less than what you’d pay in-store. Otherwise, look for formaldehyde-free woods, solid wood (sourced as locally as possible), recycled or reclaimed wood and FSC-certified cabinets.
  • Energy efficiency: Appliances are one of the most satisfying upgrades you can make for your kitchen, making it easier to get those dirty jobs done – unfortunately, they also use a huge amount of energy and can account for 10% of your home’s energy bill! Energy efficient appliances are very high-tech and far more affordable than you think, delivering great results while costing you – and the planet – less in the long run.
  • Water efficiency: Most people have bought into energy-efficient appliances, but what about water use? The right low-flow faucets can deliver the pressure you want but use 30% of the water a regular faucet would use – and in a kitchen, that adds up.

Remodeling your Kitchen? We Can Get you Eco-Friendly Granite Countertops and More at Wholesale Prices

In addition to our affordable kitchen countertops and fittings, our sales staff are fully trained to assist you with your kitchen remodel itself and, when you purchase any kitchen cabinets line from us, we will come through to your home to measure and design your kitchen for free. Customers can also benefit from our 3.5% NJ sales tax, making your home improvement project event more affordable.

Traditional VS. Jetted Bath Tubs

Your tub is a focal point for your bathroom and getting the right one will make all the difference to enjoying your new space to the full! Here’s a quick guide from our plumbing supplies specialists in New Jersey on how to choose the right option.

Pros and Cons of Traditional Soaking Tubs

These are the classic tubs and come in a wide range of sizes, shapes and styles. You can choose between a freestanding tub or a built-in version and it’s easy to find one that fits your style and budget, whether you want a deep, elegant claw bath or a shallower, modern tub for a small space. The downside? The don’t offer any features beyond their different appearances – and while some people like the simplicity and often affordability of a traditional soak, others want a more feature-rich experience.

Pros and Cons of Jetted Tubs

Jetted tubs offer a more exciting yet spa-like experience that many people feel is the ultimate way to relax and unwind. They are also great for use in certain health or physical therapy regimens, and their massage-like qualities are ideal for sore muscles and joints. There are a wide range of jetted tubs, including whirlpool and air tubs, all in different sizes and shapes to suit your space. So, what’s the downside? Usually, these tubs come with a much bigger price tag than traditional tubs. They are more difficult – and therefore more expensive – to install and the extra features can really push your budget to the limit. They are generally larger than traditional tubs, so they use more water, take longer to fill and you’ll need enough space to comfortably accommodate it. Their jets and tubes require careful cleaning as well and can become home to bacteria and mold if neglected.

Switch Your Fan Direction For Summer!

Ceiling fans are incredibly useful home cooling devices in the summer, but many homeowners and residents aren’t getting the best performance out of them. Here is some essential advice from our HVAC system specialists in New Jersey.

Using Your Ceiling Fan in the Summer

So, why do people love using these fans in the summer?

  • The wind they produce creates a chill effect on your skin, cooling you and making a room feel up to 8 degrees lower.
  • They are a great energy saver, saving up to 40% of air conditioning costs.
  • They reduce the strain on central air conditioners and window air conditioning units.
  • Outdoor fans let you stay outside for longer in greater comfort, cooling the air and keeping insects away

How to Set Up Your Fan for Summer

Ceiling fans don’t just move air across your space, they move it in a vertical direction too. In summer, your fan should rotate in a counterclockwise direction, which pushes cool air down towards the floor. As a result, you don’t have to set your thermostat so low, and you can keep your home cooler without overworking your air conditioner or increasing your energy bills excessively.

In winter, simply reverse the direction of the blades so that they rotate in a clockwise direction to make your space warmer. By pulling cool air upwards in winter, ceiling fans pushes naturally rising warmer air down along the walls back to ground level, which makes your space feel warmer and saves on heating costs.

Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers - When to Use Them

There are many solutions out there to help you achieve the most comfortable environment for your home or office but knowing exactly when to use them is key to getting the best results! Here are some insights from our plumbing supply company.

Everything You Need to Know About Humidifiers

This is a device that adds moisture to your indoor air. By changing that dry indoor air by adding humidity, they can help alleviate dry skin, nose bleeds, and chapped lips. They are best used in dry winter conditions.

Different types of humidifiers include:

  • Cool mist – Safe, natural and affordable to run, this is an effective type of humidifier but does need extra care and cleaning to prevent mold growth.
  • Warm mist – Great for people with allergies or respiratory problems, this humidifier is also quiet to run.
  • Ultrasonic – This is a very quiet-running option ideal for public spaces, often featuring both cool mist or warm mist options.
  • UV – This new humidifier technology uses UV light to kill germs, making them especially suited to nurseries, children’s play areas and other areas where germs are a concern.
  • Whole-house – These control air humidity through your entire home or office space according to seasonal needs.

Everything You Need to Know About Dehumidifiers

Dehumidifiers work to remove excess water vapor from the air in your home or office and are ideal for use through the rainy season. Too much moisture in the air can aggravate respiratory conditions like asthma, and lead to mold growth, condensation inside your home and other issues.
Different types of dehumidifiers include:

  • Heat pump – This regulates moisture by using a heat pump and coil system with a fan.
  • Ventilators – These are ideal for areas that don’t see much use but can become mold growth areas, like crawlspaces or basements. Elevated humidity will trigger the system’s exhaust fan to dry out the air.
  • Chemical absorbents – These are simple dehumidifiers filled with a desiccant agent with a silica-based gel. A fan drives humid air out and moisture is absorbed by the chemicals inside.
  • Whole house – Similar to the whole house humidifier, this equipment will regulate indoor air humidity throughout the building and adjusts as the seasons change.

Why Does My Water Look Rusty?

Have you noticed a reddish, rusty color when you run water in your home or backyard? Here’s what the cause is – and what to do about it – from your local plumbing supply company in New Jersey.

What causes rusty water?

Water looks rusty when iron compounds are present, and these can get into your water supply in various ways, including:

  • A break in the water mains
  • Water hydrant flushing
  • Street sweeping
  • Routine maintenance on your water pipes
  • Depressurization of your water system
  • Damage to water pipes
  • Corrosion of iron pipes

This can affect your hot and cold water, but if you are only noticing the rust color when running hot water, this could be due to:

How to fix rusty water

Usually, rusty water is a temporary event that resolves itself, especially if it is due to a main pipe maintenance or a temporary depressurization. However, if you notice this issue consistently, you should call in plumbing professionals to take a look and perform repairs.

5 Mistakes You Don't Want To Make In Your Kitchen Remodel

Remodeling a kitchen is a big project with lots of different elements to balance, so it’s no surprise that mistakes can easily happen! Here are some of the most common issues to watch out for from our kitchen remodel team, so you don’t end up in the same boat.

Mistake Number 1: Ignoring the Kitchen Triangle – The Kitchen Triangle is comprised of your fridge, refrigerator and stove, and getting this triangle wrong can severely disrupt the flow of your space. This might sound like a minor thing, but because these elements are often used at the same time it’s essential that you can move between them quickly, easily and unimpeded. The last thing you want is a kitchen island blocking you off from the sink or refrigerator when you’re cooking!

Mistake Number 2: Style over Function – Kitchens are a focus of the home, and it’s also become a heart of the design of a home, but that doesn’t mean that style should come first. Don’t spend all your time sourcing tiles and finishes, and end up with a kitchen where the dishwasher door blocks a doorway, or where you can’t open the refrigerator and a cabinet or pantry door at the same time. After all, the best kitchens are a pleasure to cook in as well as a pleasure to look at.

Mistake Number 3: Forgetting about Lighting – Unlike other rooms, proper lighting is essential for the performance of a kitchen, so you can’t just replicate what’s in the lounge or bedroom. The best kitchens combine types of lighting – general ceiling lighting, under-counter lighting (task-lighting) and feature lighting (for example, hanging lights over a breakfast bar) – to ensure that the space is perfectly lit whether you are working at the stove or entertaining.

Mistake Number 4: Not Maximizing Storage – Kitchens are workhorses, busy spaces that take a lot of household traffic, and where gadgets are king. This means two things – you need lots of counter space, and lots of storage. Every part of your kitchen should work to maximize this in order to create a highly functional space that’s clutter-free and easy to clean. So be sure to consider kitchen islands, breakfast bars and cabinets that reach to the ceiling.

And Mistake Number 5? Not Visiting NJ Plumbing Wholesalers!
Want to save on your kitchen remodel? Visit your local plumbing wholesalers! Boiler Safety Valves: Essential Protection At Home And In Industry

Boilers are in homes; industries and properties across the country, and these important pieces of equipment have safety devices installed in them to make sure that residents and their families can enjoy the practical benefits of hot water on demand without placing themselves at risk. One of these devices is a boiler safety valve.

Why are boiler safety valves important?

Boilers operate under a lot of pressure, and the hot water and steam they contain can cause severe injury if the boiler should fail. Safety valves work to protect lives from a variety of boiler failures, including:

  • An imbalance of fluid flow caused by the failure of isolation valves.
  • Failure of a cooling system, allowing the water or steam to expand and rupture the boiler.
  • Ambient temperature changes.
  • Failure of the control instruments of the boiler.
  • Transient pressure surges.
  • Heat exchanger tube failure.

The valve works to relieve the pressure building up inside the boiler. Without this pressure relief, the boiler is at risk of bursting. All boilers are required to have at least one of these valves, depending on the boiler’s capacity. In the USA, only non-assisted safety valves are permitted, and they are located inside the boiler steam drum itself. If the pressure rises above the recommended level for safety, these are automatically open and release excess pressure to take the strain off the boiler drum.

Once pressure is back down to safe levels, the valve will reset itself to prevent the pressure dropping too far and wasting energy. This reset mechanism reactivates the safety valve, which will then trigger again if the pressure gets too high.
